I'm seriously considering getting it this sale. It appeals to my inner-engineer! Plus, I will have an advanced program with archaic ideals! (sacrifices to the moon gods before great voyeages)

Well.. there are actually different approachen on how to play KSP.
You can "Just build some rockets" and enjoy the ride and fly them. Just construct the most strange or funny things. But that will get boring after a while (imho).
The next - and as far as i know the most useful approach - is to set yourself goals and play the game to achieve those. For example you try to follow the US or soviet spaceprograms and build a satellite and try to achieve stable orbits as your first goal. The next thing is to send a man to space and retrieve him alive or make landings on the spot etc. Then you make flyovers of Mun (moon) or Minmus (Moon 2) or even attempt a landing there.. Then Duna (Mars) is next..

You can pretty much do that in various ways. As the rockets are build by yourself you will find yourself constantly trying to upgrade your already built rockets in order to increase efficiency or capabilities. Once you lay your hands on mods the game will just become a _huge_ set of potentials. There are, for example, mods for searching for resources on other celestial bodies, map bodies (like the SRTM Program of nasa) or packs that just give you dozens of new (and balanced) parts for building rockets.
For flying from point a to b you should have either a calculator at hand - since the physics model is pretty accurate.. OR you install mods like Mechjeb that do the maths for you and set up everything that you can either fly by yourself according to the space-TomTom guide OR let it fly for you. That way you can just play the game and leave the math to nutcases who want to spend time on that ;)

Current state of the game
The game is still in Alpha, version 0.21 is about to come, but very playable. Updates are currently focusing on "under the hood" things that you sometimes wont notice in game but pave the way for further features like an upcoming career mode, resource gathering and other things. It has still some problems, like you'd expect from an Alpha but they can be ignored for 95% of the gametime (if you dont plan on building realistic airplanes that is..)

Sounds right up my alley! I hear some space programs are starting to institute this game as a brain exercise. Im looking forward to Planetary Annihilation and Star Citizen (makers of freelancer) in the near future! Gotta get my scifi on...

I got it when it was the Daily Deal. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I like it.
